March 3 - Tibetan New Year

Mark
Mark is a volunteer from New York who just arrived on March 1st. He will continue the training of the monks on video editing. One month was very short for some training of this kind, so I am glad that somebody will take over and continue the work. Mark will stay for 3 months, so he will have plenty of time to make more progress.

Tibetan New Year
"Losar" is the Tibetan New Year. I happens on March 3rd this year, but it is not always on the same day. There were some celebrations in the morning, presided by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This was the only opportunity I had to see him during my stay. Better late than never!

The ceremony started at 7 am. on the roof of the monastery. This was only for a few high ranking monks, the Tibetan government, and the press. Because of my connections with the video lab at the Namgyal Monastery, I could get a press pass to film the events. Mark also got a press pass, and could bring his video camera. With also two monks helping us to film the event, we will have footage from 4 cameras to do a documentary on Losar at the Mamgyal Monastery.

At 9 am. everybody went down one floor to the main temple of the monastery, where a few more people could see the ceremony. There was dancing in Tibetans costumes, and lots of prayers and chanting. Tea was served to everybody, and also rice and other things to eat.

At 10 am., the Dalai Lama went down to the main courtyard, where all the public was waiting. There were a few thousand people there. There was a short concert by Tibetan musicians, and His Holiness made a short speech to the crowd. That was in Tibetan so I don't know what he said...
