November 7, 2008 I arrived in India late on November 6. I was welcomed at the airport by 2 Rotarians from Ludhiana Central, Harish and Sanjay, and they drove me to Ludhiana. A 7-hour drive throughout the night! Rotarian Harish Singla is my main coordinator for this trip in India. I have done many projects with him in the past, but I had not yet met him in person. We started exchanging emails shortly after my previous trip to India. He is very active in Rotary, and we ended up doing many matching grants through the Matching Grants Website, communicating through phone and email. Coincidentally, we ended up both receiving on the same year, 2005, the Citation for Meritorious Service award from The Rotary Foundation, one of the top awards from The Rotary Foundation. After a short rest in the morning, we went to visit a school at noon. Harish Singla (third from the left in the photo) is the President of this school. We did a matching grant at this school with my Rotary Club (Torrey Pines): project D-871 for $12,750. I was glad to be able to see with my own eyes the equipment we purchased. We originally wanted to buy computers for the school, but the school received some computers from another source before the project was approved, so we changed the shopping list. Instead, we provided a generator, bookcases, a scanner and printer, microscopes, sewing machines, etc. In the evening, I attended the meeting of the Ludhiana Central Rotary Club. In attendance was one of the ministers of Punjab, a good friend and supporter of the club.
In the morning I visited some hospitals in Ludhiana where we had done some projects in the past. Harish Singla did a lot of projects at the Shri Krishna Hospital, some of them through my Rotary Club. Therefore I saw a lot of plaques and Rotary logos all over the place. This includes some dialysis machines donated through project D-548 with the San Diego Uptown Sunrise Rotary Club and the Torrey Pines Rotary Club ($23,900), a ventilator for a trauma center through project D-705 with the Torrey Pines Rotary Club and Gold Coast Lake Success Rotary Club ($12,500), a camera and laser for an eye care center through project D-805 with the Torrey Pines Rotary Club ($48,000). There were also other Rotary projects for a laparoscopic center, a blood bank, X-Ray center, endoscopy centre, etc. Note that there is room on the board for a couple of extra Rotary centers... We also went to the Swami Vivekanand Hospital to visit the Rotary Eye Care Center and see the donated Phaco Emulsification machine through project D-261 for $21,300 with the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club. This hospital was also the location for a Polio Surgery Camp held in March 2006, and funded through project D-269 for $30,500 with the Torrey Pines Rotary Club. Therefore in a short period of time, I visited 5 projects that had been done through my Rotary Club in the last few years. In the afternoon I attended a Special Olympics event sponsored by the Ludhiana Central Rotary Club. |
