Click on a photo to see a bigger one By Amanda Wirtz The Rotary Club of Kampala North has sponsored the initiation and development of several community corps in Nkondo Sub-County. As organized groups, these Corps are able to more effectively address their needs, increase their collective empowerment, and further the development of the community with the spirit of 'Service Above Self'. Due to an expressed need for health education, we paid a late morning visit to provide training to the Handicapped Community Corps at the resident of a leading elder in the disabled community (a retired veterinarian). Approximately 25 members and corps supporters joined together (with special visitors from Kampala North Rotary Club) to receive training on preventative health practices and patient empowerment and advocacy. I facilitated the training with the support of Joanna who joined me in presenting improvised skits on challenging health care system scenarios common to their community. Upon our departure, we also presented a comprehensive village healthcare book to the Corps entitled "Where There Is No Doctor". Leo, the leader of the handicapped group (a man who has risen above a rather robust case of leprosy which claimed both feet and several fingers) was overjoyed at the opportunity to learn more! He pledged to continue training his peers and his community - spreading our training and the information provided in the book. We were blessed to share the afternoon together – with closing remarks from President Oskar from Kampala North – a gracious heralding of support for this group which inspired us all. |
